As part of its effort to combat plastic waste, the Municipality of Skiathos installed three Drinking Water Refill Stations in and around Skiathos Town in August 2021.
Drawing from the Profitis Ilias source of spring water 250 metres above sea level, the Refill Stations were placed along the island’s existing drinking water network, separate from Skiathos Town’s Ftelia fresh water network.
Various properties of the water are measured every week at a number of points along the network. Thorough testing is carried out once a month with all results sent for analysis to the State Chemistry lab.
Twice per day the network is checked for leaks, and every three months the consumption statistics are recorded. The water drawn from each station is given to the nearest cubic metre (1,000 litres).
Each cubic metre (1,000 litres) of water drawn from the Refill Stations is equivalent to 2,000 half-litre bottles saved from Skiathos’s plastic waste stream.
According to municipal statistics, during the 2021 summer season (May to October), suppliers on Skiathos imported more than 880,000 bottles of water to the island.
Since installation of the stations (in August 2021) an equivalent of approximately 98,000 bottles were saved through the use of the Refill Stations.

The carbon footprint of a single plastic water bottle is almost 1,050 times that of a glass of tap water.

The Drinking Water Refill Stations are strategically located – Stations 1 & 3 in the vicinity of two of the town’s schools, and Station 2 in Platanos square, a short walk from the port.
